A punch socket is a functional tool used to tighten and loosen a variety of nuts and bolts. A punch socket is designed to withstand a higher torque and can be used with air ratchet or impact wrenches.

In situations where an ordinary socket wrench will quickly encounter its limitations, a punch socket can easily handle even the most clamped bolts.

Differences between a punch socket and a regular socket

If you see a punch socket and a regular socket next to each other, you might be tempted to think that these two were alike. But there are actually some pretty big differences that are very important.

Ordinary sockets are typically made of chrome vanadium steel, while a good punch socket is made of chrome molybdenum special steel. This type of steel is much more durable and can withstand vibrations. A big difference is that regular sockets are mostly used with a ratchet to remove bolts. A punch socket, on the other hand, is used almost exclusively with electric impact wrenches.

Another difference is that a punch socket has a hole at the bottom that makes it possible to lock the punch socket with a locking pin. This prevents the punch socket from coming out of the impact wrench due to the vibrations from the machine.

Can a punch socket be used instead of a regular socket?

Can a punch socket be used instead of a regular socket?

This is probably a question that many are now asking themselves. And the answer is that depending on what you need to have screwed on, then you can use a punch socket with a regular hand ratchet.

The biggest problem you may encounter here is that a punch socket is often made of a thicker steel than a regular socket, and thus has larger outside diameters, this can be especially a problem if you need to use the top in small areas where there is no a lot of space.

When that is being said, it is very important that you keep in mind that you should never wear a regular socket on an impact wrench, as this can have serious safety consequences.

The thinner design and generally more brittle steel used to make normal sockets do not absorb the impact forces when used on an impact wrench and can therefore break very easily. This can result in metal parts being sent flying, which of course can be very dangerous for anyone in the surrounding area.
